No' I don't plan on letting them smoke it. I live in Oregon where it is now legal to grow on your property. I just got a large plant for the backyard, but the chickens free-range there. Although it will have a cage around it, I know they will be curious. What happens if they taste it? Will it harm them? Thanks for answering my weird question.

They'd eat the seeds, any seed eating bird will. I guess you won't have seeds though! I doubt they eat much of the leaves, unless they're very hungry. Since the leaves don't have much THC in them, I doubt they'd get very "high". As for harm it's a pretty nontoxic plant, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks!
Most of the leaves will be too high (no pun intended) for the girls, but I have one, "Attila the Hen" who can jump through an open window, so jumping on to the edge of the container wouldn't be too much for her if she liked the taste.

Well, I can speak from experience. My chickens enjoy eating cannabis when I give them a hand full of dried leaves from time to time. I've heard it's a natural wormer, so they've been getting it for a number of years. And, no, it does not act on their brains like it does on humans. They act no differently after ingesting it.

It's legal in my state, too, and I've been using home-made cannabis salve when one gets a painful wound to relieve the pain and swelling.

Yep, speaking from experience here, too... Colorado... They like it, its actually fed to cattle around here; well, hemp is... Plant and seed. But before flower, there's really no difference in cannabinoid profile; they won't get "high", in fact, it is a good source of trace minerals and protein ;)

Oh but yeah, keep them away if you don't want the bottom branches "pruned" ... They don't really bother the flowers ;)

The answer is yes. In one day, Before I could get the cage around it, they ate the bottom 2 feet of the plant. Needless to say I am quite bummed.

LOL I love this thread.
It is my understanding that THC isn't released unless it's brought to high temperatures, 180 or so.
I don't know if that is factual or not.

Aw snap :( But...they were pruning for you... Don't need the bottom branches anyway ;)

I forgot to mention to keep seedlings protected ;)

It will recover....maybe...chin up ;)...but now you're going to HAVE to guard it; they know where it is and will hunt it down lol...

True. But the body breaks down other cannabinoid like CBD, CBN, CBG, THCa... They are still there, just not "psychoactive"...

Also, before flower, the THC profile is near nonexistent. The THC is concentrated in the trichomes of the flowers. So leaves are pretty much THC free, or low, like 3%.

No high chickens.

But excellent source of the Omega fatty acids to get into your eggs :D

The good thing is I know what to do with the plant after harvest!
