I fed my chickens treats over the summer but they got their grit from the yard/woods/driveway so I didn't worry about giving it to them because I knew they were getting it outside. But now its winter and they have to stay inside so I been just feeding them layer feed. They don't get grit outside now because of the snow. Do they need grit if they are just eating Purina Layer feed??? I want to start giving them treats again but if I do I will go buy them some grit. Also when I get them grit should I just leave it in a bowl and let them get it whenever they want or only give it them once a day???

If you are giving them sunflower seeds in the shell and other treats it is a good idea to have a small bowl of grit available. #3 is the recommended size for full-size chickens at my feed store. This is if they can't get it free ranging (snow).

I have to agree with A.T.Hagan that if you aren't giving any treats they don't need it.

Put the grit in something that they won't knock over and let them have free access to it if you decide to go that route. I keep mine near the oyster shell mix (oyster shells mixed with their
crushed egg shells).

I agree with A T u dont need grit if feeding only mash
