Yes I think they can purr when they're happy - I also notice that mine make a grinding noise with their beak when they're enjoying themselves.

A chicken purring is a lovely sound. Almost as good as a cat's purr. I also love the purring sound of a happy guinea pig. Even more fun in the world of happy chicken is the way little chicks will trill themselves to sleep when they are under mama heating pad. I've never heard a chick trill when going to sleep under a heat lamp.
