A few moments ago we found our hybrid cockerel pecking our Buff Orpington who was laying on the floor. "Borp" was bleeding and already dead. It was the only one of the three we hatched that hadn't started crowing so we are unsure as to whether it was a hen or cockerel. The dead Borp had a swollen eye from being attacked by hens a few days earlier. The three Borps were seperated from the hybrid birds but somehow got back into the paddock.

Would the cockerel have killed a hen? Would it have pecked an already injured bird? Will the cockerel do it again having killed once?

It is all very sad.

A injured bird should be taken out because they will kill it.Orpingtons are so layed back that they are on the bottom of the pecking order.
