Do Columbian Wyandotte's mature more slowly than other chicks?

Hello!

I know this thread is about maturity...but some of you may be working with breeds that deal with Columbian Pattern. There are a lot of things that you can share, or have questions that deal strictly with the Columbian Pattern. I am opening a new thread and hope that those who raise Columbian patterned birds will join in and help everyone learn from their experiences.

The thread will be called "
“Building and Working With the Columbian Patterned Birds".

Hope to see some of you there.

Rob

I don't know if CW's mature more slowly than other breeds but I can say they all mature differently. I have 11 C W's at 5 weeks. Some are near feathered out and twice as large as others. Silvermist and Tink barely have their wing feathers. But all are healthy and active. They are similar to children all gloriously different. As long as they appear /act healthy I'd say "no worries"

Our 4 week old Columbian Wyandottes are also way behind in development than our previous little flock (Welsummer. SL Wyandotte and Dominique), but despite their slow development, they are progressing just fine. I don't feel the need to take photos every day like I did with the previous flock. Like a fine wine, I trust they will age well!

Your photo could have be taken at my place. My Wyandotte looks just like yours and mine is 7 weeks old. She strong and able to flight short distances. She also very sweet. I'm guessing she a late bloomer. Love your picture, they look great.:)

Probably just a late bloomer. Unless she is really acting sick, I don't think you should be too worried.
They look like beautiful chicks though!

I think she looks happy and healthy in her awkward feathering out stage. She just must be a late bloomer, hang in there.

My Columbian Wyandotte Deborah is also extremely slow growing in the feather and size department. She is still 98% fuzz with only a little wing feather showing and no tail. Whereas her brooder mates of the same age are all getting feathers rapidly. The only exception is Dinah, our Light Brahma, who is even more behind and only has stubs for wings at 2 weeks old!

I have the same issue with my GL Wyandotte! She is the oldest and biggest of my current group but has feathered sporadically. She's finally getting some feathers other than her primary wong feathers and she's about 5-6 weeks old! I've read they can be known to feather more slowly. My Olive eggers have been the quickest to grow and feather, followed by my ameraucanas. My polish and barred Plymouth Rock at behind them- but the Wyandotte is almost twice as big but practically bald! They are all eating and drinking well so I'm grateful for that!

I know my silver laced Wyandotte is a bit of a slow developer so my guess is your Wyandotte will be a bit of a slow grower as well.Dont worry, she will surely catch up soon. Arent Wyandottes sweet! I just ♡love mine!!

just came across this post I was wondering the same thing. I got an 8 day old wyandotte for my wild hen who was broody but lost her chicks, (he is now being mothered by 2 hens,) he is 18 days old today. very strong loves to scratch is doing well but he is big, much bigger than the wild chicks of the same age, however he has not developed feathers or tail. when compared to the wild chicks he is much less able, he does not jump/climb, or fly like they do, his wings are much smaller, and mom is trying to get him into the trees to roost but he is not ready yet, he struggles to get into the crate at night cannot jump over the sides. she is very patient with him but he is not as capable I am watching and provide a lift up for him to roost with mom hoping he will one day be able to get up into a tree out of the way of predators. I remember when my RI first came to me she took a while and still is more clumsy in the jumping department, I think due to the different body shape from the wild hens. as long as they are healthy i'm ok with it.
