Do dog owners just not care anymore?

It is my firm opinion that people are careless when it comes to their animals. Dogs can be a weapon. Would you leave your gun laying out? no. Why leave your dog to roam and kill or even annoy. Why dump your dog if you had a problem with it? Do you not think others will too? Just b/c you live in the city and have no "farm smarts" does not give you the excuse to bring your problems to us! So you live in the county, or moved to the county, and you think it is great for your dog to roam? Dogs are socal pack animals, you think it is cute he made friends.... do you not think a pack of beagles could bring down a calf?

I now know why these rescues and shelters (that care) make people fill out app's and take background checks.

Thank goodness none of them got to any of your animals. My Dad used to pepper (BB Gun) dogs for pooing on his grass. I applaud you for only using a BB. Maybe if we farmers, of all size farms, where allowed (and supported by laws and the people who enforce them) to fine people with proof for this mess, things would change a tiny bit.

**Sorry am a bit raw today.**

if you don't have the heart to shoot the dog, if it's friendly, make a note stating that if this dog enters your property and harasses your animals again, the dog may never return back home...or something to that effect. tie the note to the dog's collar and send it off. What is your neighbor thinking telling you to bring the dog back if he gets onto your property. you're not a babysitter?!? My dogs got off my propert ONCE and I apologized furiously to the owner of the property they were at. they were playing with the neighbors dogs and didn't cause any harm but i felt i should have been watching better. needless to say they never leave my yard anymore.

I don't think I am in the minority on this site , but I have 4 dogs of my own also do rescue & rehab for small breeds so there is anywhere to 7-8 dogs on property at any given time . I am sorta of lazy sometimes so I put in a doggie door but this opens up into an acre of securely fenced yard . Now also living in the boonies many of my neighbors have hunting dogs of all sorts . Now my fav little pommie has a wardrobe ( don't laugh ) some think he's cute others poke fun.

This spring we decided to start with having chickens we built coops runs etc . So far this summer I have escorted 2 different dogs home to have a discussion with their owners asking them to control their dogs 1 has managed to do just that . The 2nd time I escorted dog # 2 home the owner said he couldn't control where his dog roams

at which time I told him well I can no problem! I am done with convincing people that I am done with their roaming dogs. Now I am a small person but dynamite comes in small packages. I have been nice but firm ya can't let emotions overtake you when dealing with other peoples animals . Good luck keep ac on speed dial maybe a paint gun handy .

must not be a prob in Ga as I have had AC drive past my house and not say a word and they looked over in my yard.. and when I called them to report the neibors dogs harassing mine.. It old them My dog is tied out front and I'm afraid they will attack him and they said nothing. I dont have a fenced yard so i have no choice and he can't be inside all day but we are fencing our yard soon.. that and I check on him several times, one of us (my 5 kids, hubby and me) are always looking out at him. to check on em.

Since you know who they belong to: Call them up and tell them that you have put out poison for `predators' and you want to make sure they keep their dogs at home as you can't be responsible for their dogs.

As soon as they come back (or any others show up) take pictures of them on your property (I always carry a camera). Call the Sheriff's office immediately and report that the dog(s) tried to attack you when you got between it(them) and the poultry. You'll have the photos, so the rest of the story can't be disputed (no other witnesses and they were on your property). Dogs attacking poultry? Meh, not worth sending out a cruiser. Dogs attacking humans? Much more attention/action by all parties.

A loose dog is road kill waiting to happen, shooting them dead with rifle is a kindness.

Good luck!

No kidding, this is post is one of dozens it seems like I've read about dogs. I would call animal control on the woman since you "know where she lives." Have them educate her about what can happen to dogs that wander.

[[[[.......It isn’t fair for me to keep my dog at home in a small area and their dogs get to run all over the place… ]]]]

The big difference is that you will have your dog well into old age, and their dog won't live long.

I've often lived where there is a neighborhood problem cause by city folk who can finally move to the country and mistakenly think that once they are in the country, they can do whatever they like and nobody can tell them what to do. It takes them awhile to get settled in and learn to fit into the neighborhood. Sometimes getting them trained will take multiple visits from the sheriff and animal control.

I have perimeter fence to keep dogs out and if anyone allows their dog to roam, the local coyotes take care of the problem really quickly. They even killed the Newfoundland who was left loose 24 hours a day.

There have been prosecutions for animal cruelty in my area for shooting dogs with BB guns and paint ball guns. It is legal to shoot them for harrassing livestock. It's not legal to injure them.

Not necessarily. Air rifles are specifically disallowed in Tempe's city code (http://www.tempe.gov/citycode/22OffensesMisc.htm), and also in Phoenix's (http://phoenix.gov/CITYCODE/PTIITHC...H23MOCO_ARTIIOFAGPUSA_DIV4BUTOWEFI_S23-41FIDE), and I would bet that if you check other cities and towns, they are illegal there, too.

This is Arizona's exact law on dogs attacking livestock:
"3-1311. Dogs killing or chasing livestock; liability of owner; classification

A. If any person discovers a dog killing, wounding or chasing livestock, or discovers a dog under circumstances which show conclusively that it has recently killed or chased livestock, he may pursue and kill the dog.

B. The owner of a dog is liable for damages caused by the dog chasing livestock. In the case of a dog killing or wounding livestock, the owner of the dog is liable for damages to the owner of the livestock equal to three times the value of the livestock killed or wounded.

C. An owner of a dog who intentionally or recklessly allows or causes the dog to:

1. Wound or kill livestock owned by another person is guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor.

2. Chase livestock owned by another person, causing injury to the livestock, is guilty of a class 3 misdemeanor. "

Note that in Arizona, the definition of livestock does NOT include poultry. I'm still looking through the revised statutes to see if I can find anything about dogs and poultry.

Do you think it is about the same for Georgia as far as the law and punishments go? Good news is today i havent seen any of the dogs back and they arent wondering around the road. The lady who owned the mix has him inside her fenced yard today
