Do doves NEED a partner?

I've seen many people recommend a pair. However, I only want one male dove but I won't/shouldn't get it if it NEEDS a partner. I can play with them for majority of the day (although it is said they are hands-free pets). Would they get lonely? Do they need a partner?

Ringneck doves and pigeons make affectionate, tame, hands-on pets and can be kept singly if your living situation allows for the bird to never be alone during the day more than a few hours.

That said, they will appreciate a partner. Pigeons will be less affectionate if you have two, but ringneck doves are just about as tame whether kept singly or in a pair.

Diamond doves and other species need a mate and do not as a rule become very tame.

The short answer is no, they dont. But I highly recommend getting two. Whether it be two males, or two females, or a pair. Just some company for them. Why do you say you won't get one, if you have to have two? Can you not accommodate for two? You wouldn't have to be as intentional about holding your bird if you had two. But if you have the time to handle your bird on a daily basis, one will be very happy with you I'm sure.
