I’ve heard that as long as they have a shelter to lay their eggs, and a secure run, that ducks will be fine without a coop. Is this true?

Yeah, if they can get out of wind and rain plus security that's what they need. In places with weasels a house is needed for security. Otherwise its not a necessity.

Ok

What do you mean by "a shelter"?
A place to get out of the wind and rain, also predators. If you live somewhere with limited predators like this is fine

I'm confused though. If you have a secure run, then the predator proofness of the shelter shouldn't matter, right? The OP said he/she had a secure run.

Like something with a roof to lay eggs in. A dog house or a small three wall structure
I suppose it depends where you live. If the run is predator proof, then the predator-proof nature of the shelter shouldn't matter. Where we live, the weather shifts (and snow and rain blow sideways), so a three-sided shelter wouldn't work. We do wrap three side of our run in 6mm plastic for the winter, but the ducks have 24/7 access to the duckhouse, and that's where they usually lay their eggs.
