Do geese help protect the other poultry since they are mean?

Geese are walking, talking composters that deposit more compost than they eat.....or at least it seems like it.

I've noticed that they make frequent 'deposits'.

Ducky (the confused goose that thinks she is a chicken) has adopted the 2 little goslings we hatched in the bator. She will grab any chicks that get within reach and sling them. She will hiss and honk at the bigger chickens.

That's what Gosey did when we got Donald (The duck). She remains totally attached to her 'son', and even aids and abets him in his sexual offenses towards the hens.

Hey there,

When I had geese they were great watchdogs...but I'm not sure I would say they protected all the other poultry we had so well. I still lost chickens and ducks when I had them, but they were terrific at sounding an alarm to predators.

I never lost geese to animal predators, only to people that would try to run them over (kids in cars) when they walked down the road to swim in the bog on our street...

They really seemed to watch out for themselves well, but didn't care much what the other birds did.
They are totally viscious to defend their goslings tho... I had seen them run off stray dogs (german shepherds and labs) and no raccoons messed with them.

I got rid of mine tho because I was sick of people trying to steal their goslings in the spring when they walked the road... and yeah, they can be pretty messy lol.
I had American Buff and Toulouse. I miss them!

Hope this helps some.
Take Care,
Bill.
