do hens take turns to lay

I have 6 hens and 4 nesting boxs. The hens dont all lay at the same time or daily. however when one is laying the other waits for her turn. Is there a reason why they dont just use another nesting box.

There is always a favorite nesting box. The others will get used, it will take a higher ranking hen in the favorite and the lower ranking hen will go to another box.

But dont they lay at the same time. Or is it always one by one?

Each hen is an individual, so their timing on laying varies. Generally, it takes about 25 hours to make an egg. So you will see them laying later and later, until they skip a day, then start back up in the morning.
