Our chickens are about 8 weeks old. the other day I heard one of my buff chicks make this terible loud sound! Was so startling that my dog ran over to the run! it didn't sound like a typical rooster crow but how does it sound when a rooster first starts to crow??? My kids heard the sound the next day or so?? the chick that's doing it is a buff rock chick and is bigger than the others does this mean this chick is a rooster? it was soooooo loud. We have 6 chicks.. they were supposed to be all hens but 2 of them I wonder if they will be roosters? This one that may be crowing? is a good sign.. The other chick is a very light gray Bard Rock chick and just seems more outgoing and more likely to butt heads with this other buff chick that is starting to make noises.

We are new to chickens and still learnign!

anyone have input?

YES!! his/her? comb is much redder. we have 2 buffs.. one with pinkish legs (buff orp?) and the other buff that is making these loud noises has yellow legs and is much larger and has a bigger redder comb (buff rock?) this buff rock that is making the noises I have noticed is the one most likely to do chest bumps with another chick (light bard rock) we wonder about being a rooster. I have seen this buff rock chick when doing the chest bump kinds of puff his feathers out a bit .

The other chick we wonder about is a Bard rock. We bought 2 bard rock chicks.. one of our bard rocks is MUCH darker with darker legs and the other bard rock is so light with lighter legs and is more likely to butt heads with this buff rock chick that is making these sounds.

We do NOT want 2 roosters so if we find out that the Buff rock chick is a rooster and my lighter Bard Rock is a rooster.. then the Buff Rock will get packing papers. Our lighter Bard Rock is sooooo social and more likely to fly on us and run to the run door when we go out. I really hope that we don't end up with 2 roosters b/c I hate to get rid of any of them but I think one rooster is enogh!

Oh boy.. i really hope it turns out that we only have the one rooster. My kids are saying "Mom.. I don't want to get rid of any of them". We named them all but Goldy the Buff Rock now making noises isn't as social as Terri the lighter Bard Rock chick who we are wondering about being a rooster. Now just watch one of the others we don't suspect will be a rooster too. When we bought them they were supposed to be all hens but I knew there could be a chance of getting a rooster b/c they can't guarantee if a rooster slips in their batches.. hmmm?

I'll go take some photos of them and post in this thread for ya'll to look at..

thanks!

At six weeks one of my "girls" made an ungodly racket! I came running. S/he did it again and it was like the first half of a rooster's crow. Erk-a-do! This chick is the largest, most aggressive and has a very wide, red comb, Definitely a boy!

Uh oh Amy that describes what Goldy did. (almost 9 weeks old now). loud ungodly sound and me and my dog came running! Goldy is the largest now of all the chicks!

Terri my lighter bard rock.. I haven't heard any noise from her.. but she/he is most likely to chest bump Goldy.. that and Terri is so much lighter than my other bard rock chick.

grabbing camera now so I can show ya'll..

Yep I heard that when a rooster first starts to crow it sounds horrible. Yipee I can't wait till mine starts to crow
