We bought some sex-link chicks back in February and one turned out to be a rooster - we named him Colonel. Two weeks later, we bought mottled Java chicks and one of those is a rooster as well, Jazz.
It's now June... Jazz is small in stature but has a big comb and has been crowing, loudly and all day, since late March. He has already produced some fertilized eggs with our older hens.
The Colonel is still not crowing... He's a really large bird, with a decent size comb, but he doesn't try to get with any of the ladies and we've never heard him make a sound.
Is he just the submissive rooster and he won't ever try to take on masculine duties? Or is Jazz just an overachiever and we're rushing the Colonel?
