Hello!

i am from the netherlands and i am a new chicken owner. I visit this website a lot and i’m learning many things. I asked a dutch forum but didn’t get an answer.
I have six chickens from all different breeds. They are 8 weeks old.
I know i have two barred rock mix and i cant tell of they are pullets or roo’s. I think they are roo’s. Can you tell me?
I also think i have two light Wyandotte’s. One very large and sometimes a bit agressive and he’s got a bigger edge in his womb and the other one is a bit smaller and a smaller womb. Can anyone see of they are roo’s? I am afraid of it. Two other kind of chickens are, i think barnevelders and i know For sure that one of them is roo and one is a pullet. I hope you can give me an answer. So i can search for a new home For the roosters.

Thank you

Im not sure but suspect they are cockerels too.

Did you buy them as chicks? I know that some dishonest people like to sell male chicks as pullets or mixed genders to newbies. 🤬
I would contact the owner if you suspect a wrong sale.

And a warm welcome from another chickenlover in the Netherlands.

My Amrocks, approx 2 months old
Left a boy. The other 2 are girls.

I agree, all boys
I wouldn't necessarily be so quick to call foul play. In any case, it's worth asking if they're willing to exchange your cockerels for pullets or give you a refund. You never know, they may say yes

Thank you for answering. I have them from a farmer For free when they where a couple of days old. and i was very naive hoping that there were a lot of pullets. I know i can turn them back but i know that they will become meat. But i really like them a lot, so i hope for a Nice place for them. I can keep just one.

In that case it's unlikely the farmer knew their gender and you just got plain unlucky that they all turned out to be cockerels. In any case I wish you and them well!

I don’t know about the barred rock but true Amrocks are autosexing. People who know them can distinguish their sexes after the first day.

You are probably right about the farmer. Its unlikely he had a clue what he was giving away.

Don’t assume all Dutch people who sell chickens are nice. It seems there is/was a Dutch trader active on Marktplaats (sort of Craigs list) who collects unwanted chickens and sells them to newbies for what they are not. He uses different names and addresses. Switches phones and sells out of a box without good light.

Because there are always too much roosters, many people offer them for free on Marktplaats. I did too. With every hatch there was at least one cockerel I couldn’t keep. Sometimes I have a ‘buyer’ within a few weeks, but it can take up to 4-5 months too. Most cockerels start to crow loud around 6 months old. In winter most people don't mind the noise. But in March it gets very annoying for neighbours who live nearby / are light sleepers.

People do that here too, with very young chicks though I'm more inclined to think they just plain didn't know rather than they did it maliciously. Although with autosexing breeds it could go either way. It's possible they knew and lied or they didn't know themselves
