Do I have to do this forever???

I guess I have never had a problem with "chicken mess" in the nesting boxes since I made it so they couldn't roost on top of them (they are wire boxes)

I'm not sure why i want them to change! I asked the same question when i posted the problem last month! The general feeling was they should use the perch and would get the idea easily!

I actually don't mind the dirty eggs, it's them sleeping in a dirty nest i don't like! I was having to clean/tidy it every day! Not doing that has been lovely as its been cold and snowy!

The perch is higher than the nests and its not that long, so they are as close together in the nest as on the perch!

Right i won't worry about it! I'll let them do there own thing!

Ya, who knows why they do what they do. Some days I wonder why I do what I do even when I know it's wrong

Chickens generally prefer a flat place to lay their feet, if you have a round roost that may be the reason they sleep in the boxes. Try switching to 2x4 with the bigger side up. Also as was mentioned they will sleep in the highest spot they can get to easily so raising up the roost might help.
