Hello,

I am interested in knowing if I need a permit and if there is a fee to keep chickens in Roanoke City. I have read that the county requires it but, I can't find any information on the city. I am located off of Hershberger RD.

It looks like Roanoke City doesn't generally allow livestock like chickens unless specifically permitted. However, there might be exceptions or special permits available. To get accurate and up-to-date information, it's best to contact the Roanoke City Planning, Building, and Development Department directly.
Here’s how you can reach them:
  • Phone: (540) 853-1090
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Address: 215 Church Avenue SW, Room 170, Roanoke, VA 24011
They’ll be able to confirm if you need a permit, if there’s any fee, or if there are any exceptions based on your location. I’d recommend getting in touch with them for the most reliable info.

This is the email i received after reaching out to the planning and developing....

Thank you for reaching out. Chickens (excluding roosters) are permitted in the R-7 district — the yard must be fenced, and no permits are required so long as the henhouse is less than 256 square feet.

I've copied Phillip Moore, our Zoning Administrator, who can provide assistance if you have additional inquiries.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can help with!
