Hi all, we were brought some little week old chicks last night & one of them had pasty butt. I soaked it in some warm water until it was soft enough to fall off but when it came off we could see that the vent was poking out, not at all like the other chicks. I cleaned off the surrounding feathers & put a little vaseline as I've seen other posts suggest & thought maybe it would go back in. I put her down & she immediately pooped a lot, ate & walked around just like the others. BUT the vent was still out. She kept fluffing out the feathers & I think cleaning the vaseline off so we let her be. This morning the vent is still sticking out. She seems fine, eating & all but keeps messing with that end, not sure if she is fluffing feathers but does not appear to be picking at the vent- no marks, sores, blood etc... The vent is normal pink color but the others aren't sticking out like hers. We've never had brand new babies before so I don't know what they are supposed to look like. If I should be doing something for her, please let me know & likewise, if it's normal let me know that too :). Thanks so much, I am so grateful for this forum!

I have the exact same problem as you with one of my chicks. Some advice would be greatly appreciated

I had this one of my chicks too and then I came home last night and she had died. I was so sad and heart broken.

I hope yours fair better.

khoraceck, was yours active, eating, pooping etc.. before dying? I am just wondering if I should try to find something at the library about this...?
