My 5 yr olds kindergarten class as well as the other 2 kindergarten classes are incubating and hatching eggs. They sent a note home for anyone who would like to bring one home after they are approximately 8-10 days old. (with notes on needing to get a few more and what we would need to get through the first couple of months. We decided if there were enough for him to get one then we would go ahead and try raising chickens. Neither of us have had chickens before. I have been researching online and even at the local ranch stores. Now I am pretty tempted to get chicks even if he doesn't get one from school, which we are on day 23 and not one of the eggs in his classroom have hatched yet, but the other classes have been hatching for 3 days now.

Do I want to get chicks even if we don't get the one from school???

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Raising chicks and keeping chickens is a great experience and fun for all the family. Have you checked out the learning centre? Lots of articles on raising chicks and all the info you need for moving them out to a coop, what food, keeping them safe from predators. Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
Here is an article too on raising chicks

Good luck and I hope you do decide to get some chicks it really is a rewarding experience as you nurture and watch them grow. Be sure to ask any questions everyone here to help and very friendly.

Good morning and welcome to BYC!

There are a couple of articles you may want to read as someone considering raising chickens, they may help you decide if you want to dive in:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/why-raise-chickens-in-your-backyard-the-many-reasons-benefits

Getting chickens is a responsibility, just like getting any other type of animal, so it's a good idea to really decide if you & your family are ready to take it on. I hope you'll see all the positives to having poultry and how much enjoyment they can bring.

Good luck to you and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Nice to have you join us!

Glad you have joined us and are entertaining the idea of getting your own flock.

You have already been given the best links to helping you decide if this is right for you.

The only concern I would have is decisions ahead of time of how to deal with them if the chicks are boys. Most of us with small flocks cannot have or deal with roos. Likely the eggs hatched by the school are straight run and will produce at least 50% males? So, if you do plan to adopt from the school project, explore your area resources on rehoming any if necessary. You can get sex-linked chicks or chicks that are sexed so you have a higher chance of drawing all pullets.

If you adopt the school chicks and later add more, you will need to study on how to integrate different aged chickens.

IMO the best choice is to decide how many chickens you think you can appropriately house, protect and will provide you with eggs, entertainment, or other expectations. Explore the articles to see if they fit with your expectations. And then make your decision on adopting those from the school or selecting another source.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Good luck with your decisions and plans. I do hope getting your own backyard chickens works out. It is one of the most exciting and fun adventures I have ever experienced.

I'm glad you joined our "flock!"

The other posters have given you some good advice already. If you're prepared for chickens (their care, dealing with roosters, etc.), then I'd definitely recommend them!
