Do livers become damaged by respiratory problems?

Birds with a respiratory infection would not be considered safe for human consumption, would they? Can you use them for dog food or some other use?
 
Hopefully others who normally butcher chickens will chime in with more comments. It might have something to do with the respiratory illness causing the problem. What were the symptoms seen? Did they mainly have sneezing and some congestion, or did you see bubbles in eyes or swelling of the eyelids or faces?
All of the above. Though those are things we had with our last chickens to, but their livers were healthy.
