Hello Tony,
All pheasants (including hens) make some noise. Each species is different and sometimes even within the same species you will get two roosters that will make slightly different noises. Of the 9 species I raise the noisiest by far are the true pheasants (ringneck family and japanese greens). My Reeves make the lowest sounds the male makes a soft trilling noise or a little chirp-chirp sound. You mentioned Goldens. My main breeder males (red & yellow) make a sound like a squeak. They often repeat it several times. But, it is not as loud as a chicken rooster crowing, and they don't usually do it at the crack of dawn like a rooster. Mine are usually more vocal from late morning through the afternoon. I will warn you about neighbors. They will often complain about anything. So, if you want to keep a pair or trio of goldens do so without advertising them. If you build your "pheasant house" right, they will not even know you are keeping them. Goldens are great for small yards, because you don't need to have really large pen and don't attract flies like chickens or even doves. One of my doves makes more of a mess than all of my goldens combined!. Their droppings are small and dry very quickly. A combo pen/house only has to be about 10 by 10 to keep a pair or trio in comfort. A small house built on one end with an area for them to roost in will give them protection from weather. I personally cover my entire structures with a roof so that way the pens themselves never get wet and start smelling. I put either creek gravel or pea gravel down on the floors so that when needed I can go in with a garden rake and turn it over. When my oldest son was 8 he wanted to keep pheasants. We lived in a small town in Oregon. I had the same concern as you have. But, he kept his goldens and the neighbors never even knew!
Good Luck
James
