Do RIR's make good meat birds? I just got a roo to start raising chicks and I'm wondering if the males will make good eaters.

I have some RIR eggs in the bator right and am planning on culling the roos. I have been told they are very good to eat. They don't get as large as some meat birds, but if you're not buying the chicks, the meat is less expensive.

You may end up with a 3 pound dressed bird at 16 weeks. Economically
true meat birds will be much cheaper because of the feed to meat
ratio. This can be offet a lot if you free range them.

We have eaten a bunch of our extra RIR roos. They make good soup
birds and fryers. People ate dual purpose birds for a long time before
the meat bird came along.
