Do skunks always smell?

Hey everyone. have a critter of some sort lurking around my yard at night. I've hha skunks beefib, but I can always smell them. I have fake eggs lying around to encourage my girls to lay in one spot, and I find them all over the place. One was actually broken, and one was stuffed into a jar. Whatever it was must have strolled right past Inez, who decided to sleep outdoors. I thought skunks were bloodthirsty beasts. Any ideas what this critter may be?

Oh my, this could be a lot of things. Raccoons and possums are also a good possibility because they are good with their little fists (especially raccoons )

Thanks everyone. If it was a raccoon, wouldn't it have shredded Inez? She was almost at ground level. Hi, I may never know. The ducks have been ok. Maybe I'll have a camp out

I have had racoons stroll through and not kill anything,sometimes don't know why.

Hi, welcome to BYC. To answer your question, no skunks do not always smell. We had one tunnel under an overhang on our house, and there was no smell at all. We were mystified regarding what was tunneling, until we actually saw the skunk.
