Do snakes dig holes ???

That's the only thing we could think of that got one of my chicks last night . I looked all around and found something made a little round hole underneath the bottom boards of the cage. I don't know what else it could be, but I moved them to the more secure (I hope) cage.

My guess would be mice. I used to have that problem, especially under the feeders, until I raised the feeders and made solid floors
 
It was about an inch wide, a round hole. I have seen mice, they try to get under our house, but they are tiny. Also, there were no signs of the chick at all, (no feathers or anything). I tried to find the culprit, with no luck. I buried some wire screen where the tunnel was and put bricks on top of that, but I also moved them to a safer cage.
 
My guess would still be mice, and they will take chicks. I'm not saying that it's impossible that it was a snake, but what you are describing would be a mouse hole on my farm
