Do they REALLY need...?

If you can go bigger, do it! Like fireguy said, you won't regret it in the end.
For instance, let's say I have 6 chickens that I get in the spring. By the following spring/fall, I'll be thinking about more chicks to "sustain" my flock because hens don't lay when they moult (which is usually in their second fall season-about a year and a half), and after the moult they will lay less (not always, but usually). By about three or four years old, they probably won't lay as often, depending on the breed. If you want to keep the flock "rotating" in age and have consistant layers, you'll want to get at least half more of what you started with the following year (spring).
Does that make any sense? GOOD LUCK!

It took me a lot longer to build my coup than I thought it would. And you hear that statement a lot around here. I have to say though, I really did enjoy it. so if you can, take your time, do it right one time, and most importantly enjoy yourself! I have gotten a lot of compliments on my coups, both the little one I built first, and it's replacement because the first was too small. Each are different styles and designed by me! I really liked incorporating some recycled items. 2 of my windows are cabinet doors off of the original kitchen cabinets from the 100+ year old farm house next. Beveled glass with nine panels. The people door is from the same house and has an antique glass door knob! Look around, you never know what you might find that will make it unique and save you money at the same time. Good luck on your build!
