Do we have enough room?

We have 14 chickens now (2 are cornish x that will be culled this week so that will put us to 12, rest are RIR & Dominiques) on a 1/4 acre residential lot and were originally planning to use 10 of them as meat birds to supply just us with eggs but now that my family/friends found out we are raising them on an organic, non-GMO/soy diet they are begging us for eggs.

So our thoughts are that we keep the 12 girls for eggs and get some Cornish X for our meat consumption. For personal reasons, I like to free range my Cornish x and do not want to keep them locked up in a run or tractor. Would our almost 1/4 lot accommodate our 12 layers and possibly 8 cornish x at a time?

I posted in the feeding section on how to maintain the yard for my 12 but am curious how much of the yard a larger number of cornish x will tear up. The two we have now are very active at almost 8 weeks but don't seem to do much scratching at grass.

All chicken books say that you should have a least 8 square feet per bird outside but I wouldn't worry about it very much! If you start to have any cannibalism I would downsize a little. Best of luck

25 ducks can strip a 1/.2 acre down to bare dirt.

your plant life will last longer if you irrigate. I also suggest perhaps only having the birds out part time so the plants can recover.
