well I do...I have turned a flock of good layers into feather wearing piglets!

I make the girls a baked seed block and

I used:

3 Cups of Hen scratch
1 Cup of whole wheat flour
1/2 Cup flaxseed flour
1/2 Cup grits
1/2 Cup of medium ground cornmeal
1 - 2 Cups of rolled oats
1 TBL of honey
Plenty of hot water

Optional: wild bird seed, millet, groats, winter wheat berries etc etc.

I mixed it all together and poured into well greased baking pans and baked at 350 degrees for about 1 1/2 hours...until it was hard to the touch and browned.

the first time I gave them one...they were okay with it and once they figured out what it was....they attacked!

Well the second one I gave them...I did not move my hand fast enough and got jabbed several times and received the 'stink eye' from those trying to get to the seed block only to find my hand in the way.

I admit that my big girls behave with a bit more restraint than the younger group...but not by much. LOL they grab HUGE chunks and run like the devil away from everyone to eat it alone or be chased, whichever applies at the moment.

P.S.: Sorry for the messy looking half of the coop but it is being cleaned and mucked out today following alot of rain of snow being mucked in on feet and boots.

Good idea! Yes, I've baked a protein egg bread for them during molting season; cornbread with extra eggs, too.

((BTW, I've not forgotten those blue feathers. The big boy isn't giving me any, naturally, since I want him to. ))

LOL well no hurry...I am still waiting on all the blue beads to arrive. I ordered beads from everywhere trying to match his beautiful blues.

Very luck chickens, but all that time and effort could have been spent making me a chocolate cake and/or a chocolate pie, and I would NEVER have bitten your hand like those ingrates did.

well dang it joe *slaps self in forehead* you know...you are so right. Next time I will bake for you instead....you will not give me the stink eye either will you?

I haven't baked for mine, but now I have a recipe. I do freeze veggie stew for them in the summer. Just a good stew of veggies, chicken stock, sometimes shredded chicken or hamburgar and freeze it in a container. They will peck at until it is gone, and on a hot day I am sure it is a cool treat.

Of course I'm hungry so I misread the title. I thought we were going to be talking about "Baked Chicken" here.

Just shake and bake!

That sounds like a great idea. I had not thought of that. In the summer I give them a watermelon cut in half to chow through and cool off.
