Do you band your baby chicks? If so what do you band with?

I was thinking about using strips of paper with tape seeing they will grow and need new bands, but if their is a better idea PLEASE let me know!

Thanks!

I read your post title as "Do you brand your baby chicks?" What a horrible picture in my mind. A baby peeper roundup! And then the branding iron! It must be getting late. I'd better go to bed and get lots of rest.

you can if you would like. Its your opinion. Some people do it for tell what gender they are if they have breeds that the hens and roo's look familiar. I had a friend that used the really small zip ties. but if you have a bay chick i wouldnt go with a zip tie unless you always check and see if there is enough room in the zip tie for the leg.Hope it helps!

I used zip ties when the some of the birds were chicks but checked them a lot since the chicks grow so fast. I put the bands on them when they were about 3 months old. The band were loose and a couple of the birds did manage to get them off but not at the same time so I just put the bands back on. Now I buy leg bands. The birds grow so fast I just order the adult size of what ever breed I want to band. Also when banding using the same colors of bands I put one on the right leg on one bird and one on the left leg of another bird. I have also put a different color on both legs of a bird. I use Kuhl colored plastic spiral leg bands. I have read of some one using nail polish on the bird’s toenails. Here is where I get my leg bands.

WOW!! Thanks for the help! The sizing chart was great and really helpful! I have buff orpingtons fixing to be hatched. I think I will start off with the zip ties (cheap and easy to replace with growth) and get something more permanent when they stop growing!

I:lau I had to double check the title and make sure I did not put that! My I misspell like crazy and it would be something I would do!!!
