I have six chicks in a run that is 8' X 16' and a coop that is 4' X 8'. The run is all sand so all that takes is a little spray down and some raking and it is like new. The coop is pine shavings that was mixed with DE and a small amount of sevin dust. Almost every day after I let them out into their run I use a small garden shovel and scoop up whatever poop I can find and just toss it outside the run. At that time I also turn the shavings and DE mixture over a bit and it sort of refreshes the whole coop. After about one month I add a bit more shavings mixed with the DE and Sevin. Sometimes when we are away I miss a day of cleaning and turning the shavings but for the most part the coop does not smell at all and the hens seem healthy.
