Do you eat Rabbit?

Is domestic rabbit like wild rabbit in the sense that it has little nutritional value due to a lack of fat. I read that pioneers would die of rabbit fever when trying to live off just rabbit. My survival book Say's you'd be better off surviving off Birch tree cambium. Is there a nutritional difference between domestics & wild?

Rabbit Fever? never heard that one before, rabbit has just as much nurtrition as any other meat. its a lean meat with liittle to no fat.
going to go do some research on the fever thing.
Like any food product if you make it your sole source of food yes you can certainly have issues with malnutrition.

This is what I found on rabbit fever, seems it only is present in wild rabbits and of course main host to spread it is the lovely tick.

Rabbit Fever is an infectious bacterial disease transmitted by deer flies and ticks. One of the common names for it is Rabbit Fever because rabbits also get it and early pioneers could catch it by handling or eating infected rabbits. It's a nasty bacterial infection, so if you catch a rabbit that has it, you are likely to see signs. The general rule of thumb is, in a survival situation, don't eat sick animals. The proper name for Rabbit Fever is Tularemia. It is not so common that you should avoid rabbit altogether in a survival situation and there are various infectious diseases you can get from just about any kind of animal. You have to be smart about handling and eating what you catch.

Rabbit is higher in protein and lower in fat than even chicken. Rabbit meat is also high in B vitamins, and low in calories, cholesterol, and sodium.

Rabbit, yum! I will pay the 4-H kids 5 dollars or so for their meat buns and raise them to butcher. I don't have the mess of raising them and the kids can use the money for their fair rabbits. My last bunch were New Zealand Giants. I just pop them in the slow cooker with some yummy portobello mushroom soup and butternut squash soup. Add some veggies--carrots, onions, potatoes, celery etc. The meat will just fall off the bone. Partner it with some homemade bread. Oh Wow.

the only time i've ever eaten rabbit was at a friend's parents' house. i went over for dinner (in the santa cruz mountains) and asked what smelled so good. my friend's mom said don't ask, but her stepdad said look out the window. there were cottontail bunnies on the lawn. so we had rabbit and dumpling stew, and it was incredible!! they're small, so there were 4 in the stewpot. tasted like chicken, but a tad more rich. yummy

You're all making me Hungry for rabbit!

I am starting to build another hutch today, this one will be higher off the gound than the 1st one(which is very short). If i make it wide enough I can turn it into a double hutch..maybe for the does?

We have 2 old hutches here already but they are all falling down so i am just re-using what i can off them.

Some of the kids here breed quite a few rabbits in order to get that special trio for the fair. I buy the ones that aren't good enough to win. Since there are so many people with rabbits, the not so good quality ones go for pretty cheap. It seems to work out for all of us.
