My chickens have only ever been free range. Our temps are very nice right now in Ohio. I have 5 laying hens and we get 2-3 eggs per day. They had been laying them around the garden and sometimes under the roost but I put a cat litter box in the coop with some golf balls and after a few days they started laying in there. It was after my husband left the coop door open making their area under the roost not so private...they then chose the litter box.
