Do you have a light on in your coop?

My chicks are 6 wks old, should I have a light on in the coop still?

Mine are 11 weeks and I still leave their light on all night (60 watt). They scream and cry when I turn it out, so I leave it on. I have to put it on in the evening to get them to go in. I'm thinking of putting a skylight in the roof to light up the coop in the morning and doing away with the night light. The windows are mostly blocked by fans, and it's quite dark in there. When I go in in the morning, they are all still asleep on the roost.

My older hens have no light in their coop, and never have had one. They know to go in when it's still light enough to see to get on the roost. There is one large window.

I have a low watt red night light on for my birds. My big girls are two years old. My younger ones are a year old. My babies are 1½ weeks old It might not make any difference to them but it does to me. One night my big girls night light burnt out and when I went out in the pre-dawn to check on them they were all on the floor of the coop, so I promptly replaced the bulb. I went out the next early morning and they were all in their places on their roosts. I don't know if the light had anything to do with it or not but it made me feel better.

I turned the chick's nighttime light off at 5 1/2 weeks old- I had the light off during the day at 4 weeks, when they were still living on our screened porch and never turned it on again.
They have only natural light in their coop. They wake up with the sun and know enough to be on the roost before it gets completely dark at night.
ETA: Yes, they freaked out the first few nights without their light. They got over it.

We do leave light on for our flock. More because I have this strange idea that it keeps predators away....and since we havent lost any...I'm sticking with it...lol

Yep.. I leave a small (15 watt) light on at night.. It's very dim but is just enough to draw them inside when it gets dark outside and allows them just enough light to see thier surroundings..

If we don't turn the light out at night in the coop, it would be like a pre-teen's slumber party in there! We attempted it once, went to check on them before we went to bed, and it was like party central in there!

No night lights over here. It's warm enough for the chicks day and night right now.

I have one of those solar panels mounted on the side of the coop with the three LED spotlights inside the coop pointed at the ceiling and walls.

It's not bright at all but it makes enough light to see the roost and I can see them through the hardware cloth when I want to or if I go in the coop at night.

Seems to work well. No complaints.
