Do you have coop spring cleaning plans?

This Friday is going to be in the 60s. I'm doing my spring cleaning for the coop then. I don't exactly do the DLM, but close to it. I scoop poop daily and refresh the shavings every few days. When I do a big cleaning; shovel out the bedding, scrape out old fossilized poo, then I'll use a little bleach. I put a little bleach in an old spray bottle & fill with water. Spray the walls and roosts & nest boxes with it and wipe them down, let everything dry out with all the doors & windows open and just throw fresh bedding down and sprinkle with DE. Good for another 6 months.

It got into the low 60's today and I just couldn't help myself ~ I went out and cleaned both coops ~ something I usually don't do until March or April. I took out all the wood shavings swept the floors and walls and put down new shavings ~ it smells so nice & fresh in there right now. The girls are exploring the new shavings looking for hidden treasures I think.

Now I need to get my pooper scooper and go out and clean up all the poopcicles that the dogs had hidden in the snow which is now melting. The dogs have been out in the fenced back yard playing all day and are covered in mud!

At least they are happy and will be very tired tonight.

I need to wait to get to the compost pile too. Still a couple feet of snow to try and get through.

We finally thawed out this week. The downside of that is all the poo thawed out too... it's getting pretty stinky in the barn

Poor birdies...

I use wheat straw in mine and add to it when it gets loaded up. Straw is free from my field. I use shavings in the broader. I clean the coop out twice a year, it goes on one of the gardens. I've never used bleach and don't even like the stuff. I might use vinegar but not bleach. I replace the nest box liter 3-4 time a year with grass clippings I bag up in old feed sacks in the summer months.

My habit has always been a full scrub-down with deck-brush and bleach at least twice a year. I watch the weather and wait for a sunny, warm day (usually once in spring and once in fall). The chickens are locked out of the coop for the day (in their run with the pophole door shut and their food and water) while the coop is cleaned and is dried and aired out with the coop door open.

Dirty shavings, however, are changed in the coop regularly throughout the year, and spiderwebs are brushed down as needed.

We clean our coop floor out on a weekly basis, but as soon as the weather warms to allow, I will get in there with some diluted bleach and dish soap. (like this afternoon!)~ My coop is 4'x4' square, and just 6 months old.
