When I was a kid, my dad had a business next door to our small, rural home. Although he always said, "A lock will only keep an honest man out," we did lock our doors at night.
Your Dad was right. Locks are really there to deter casual attempts to get into things. By themselves they aren't going to stop someone who is determined to get into you house or stuff. Layering your security (using steel doors and frames, deadbolts, alarms, noisy dogs, security screens, cameras, etc...) increases your chances of keeping people out. The longer it takes / harder it looks to get in, the higher the odds that a dishonest person will just give up or outright skip your place for an easier target.

I have hurricane proof windows and back French doors. I had trouble with my back door lock once and the man they sent out stated someone had tried to kick the doors in, more than once. So yes I lock up, sometimes I sleep with my upstairs bedroom windows open. But you would have to put an extension ladder against the outside wall to get in. We don't keep anything of value in the cars, but still lock them.
My next door neighbor has had his back door kicked in a number of times. He has Hugh privacy shrubs all around his back yard. So no one can see what is happening in his back yard. We have pretty good privacy in our back yard, but not enough to keep trying to kick in a door that you are not going to get into.
We have people (probably kids) who go around in the middle of the night and check car doors and sometimes front doors.
Oh wow   I’m glad we don’t really have much crime here or at least I don’t really hear of it.

When I lived in a nearby town, someone broke into the house while we were at the movies and took some valuable electronic equipment. And, the doors were locked, proving my dad's theory.

I now live alone in the country and had a situation where someone I knew -- who was struggling with some emotional problems -- would show up in the middle of the night, enter the garage, walk up to the back door.

I got into the habit of ALWAYS locking up everything, Even if I was only going outdoors for a few minutes, I locked the house behind me and carried the key. That situation is now resolved, but I still lock everything because it-- irrationally, I guess, makes me feel safer.
I’m glad the situation resolved! That’s terrifying!! But also sad 😭

It’s complicated! House is never locked. Ever. Truck is never locked when at home. But when I’m at work or the store it’s locked due to my gun being in it sometimes. Garage with dirt bikes and tools is always locked, garden tool shed and bs shed is always locked. Cabin is never locked. Gate gets locked when we leave or are home for the night.

Have mastiffs and one in particular that we purchased for protection.

Oh wow lots of different stuff to lock 😂 and he’s so handsome :love

i lived in new york city for over 30 years and never locked my car or the door to my house.

i moved up to the “country” in greenwich ct back in april. we figured we’d be safer here. it’s secluded. our neighbors are hundreds of yards away. we thought we’d have more trouble with deer than people.

in september, two cars were stolen right out of my driveway.

i like living here, but i’ll forever feel safer in the city than i do in a rural area.

It’s such a pain to keep up with lol and thank you. He’s quite a butthead though. Our friends asked if we were crazy when we said were getting a male Cane Corso. Breeder said he had an attitude and he sure did and does!
I bet! I would forget something constantly lol and oh gosh! Those are tough dogs for sure! Haha they’re awesome though!!

Oh wow that’s shocking! it kinda makes sense though in a way because I feel like I’m the city there’s sooo many people around that somebody is bound to see you trying to steal something and call the cops so they maybe dont risk versus in rural nobody would see until it’s too late and already stolen maybe? Plus every serial killer ever is always in the towns people say this never happens here 😂

in the city, people are way too concerned with themselves to care about you and your stuff.
