I thought maybe I can tell by combs but that's not working either. What do you use for leg bands?

Zip ties are also what I use! You can get them in multiple colors so it's perfect for the job. Just make sure that you never zip them tight to the leg, always leave as much space as you can without it being loose enough to slip over the foot. And if the birds are young and still growing, check them at least weekly and replace bands as they start getting too tight. You do not want to let them get tight enough that you can't slip scissors or something under them to cut them lose.

On my young birds, I like to use EZ Rings elastic leg bands of different sizes instead of zip ties because they're less difficult to remove if the bird happens to outgrow it before I notice and much easier to put on as well. I've found that they do not work well with feathered feet because of the elastic being more grippy and getting entangled in their foot feathering, though, so those only work well for clean-legged chicks.

I guess I've developed a tough heart after farming for so long.

Everyone gets a name. Everyone gets loved and cherished. Some get slaughtered, but they had a name, a good life, and a good death.

As far as chickens (now ducks) go, I do not raise chickens for the table. Just pets/show.
This. Everyone gets a name and gets respect and attention. Regardless of their intended end role.
