Do you need to worm if no signs are present?

After finding out your flock has worms through fecal samples Is there anyone who has actually had success with organic parasite killers and has taken fecal samples to their vet to verify? If so what did you use.

How prevelant are gapeworms and what would you look for and worm with if they get them?Does a fecal sample work for those as well?

Gapeworms are nasty. :p

Every area is different, ask a local vet or bird club.

Actually, to have a better idea of what kind of things to look for, it would probably be good to have a list of all of those parasites common to your particular area.

Now, some of you, might end up with a list a mile long....

Well I don't think any of my chickens have gapes. My girls seem very healthy and happy, thier feathers are shiny, smooth and soft, eyes are bright, appetites are great. Just wondering what to do if they did get it.I have lurked on threads where they were mentioned and was just curious. I have another question too if I may ask...I see a few people on this thread have mentioned specific medications that are for larger livestock as being good for treating all worms in chickens(unlike wazine) How did you find out how much to give them?I can't find any info anywhere on using them but I see some of you have used them sucessfully without harming your birds.I would like to purchase some in case trouble pops up but I'm kinda scared that I may overdose them or something without guidelines from an expert.I want to keep my ladies healthy but I also don't want to put them at risk using medicines in proportions that could do more harm than good.Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Your vet would be able to advise you on correct dosage for them. I am new to parasites in birds but I work in this area which deals with other agricultural livestock, the physiology of birds is completely different though so I shall be checking with the powers that be for their insight and wisdom on our feathered friends. I do know in other livestock it goes by weight and there are dosage instructions per kg of whichever animal is being dosed ( eg per kg of goat is different dosage to per kg of sheep) There are also different commercial names for wormers that are actually the same drug so be aware of that too. I would still say to take poo samples and just get them checked by your vet. I am taking mine in to work next week to have them checked for parasite eggs and will feel much happier when I know whether to dose them or not :)

DE.....it's said it only works when dry, I'm not sure, however, if that is 100% credible. But I was thinking, as soon as the birds swallow it it's not dry!
