Do you read to your chickens?

Hey!
Weird question here. I’ve been reading to my chickens for a few years. I’m not sure if they understand, but it’s fun to spend time with them. So far I’ve read multiple Roald Dahl books to them (I will never be to old for him)

Well that's a thought! I read on the outside sofa and they usually just pile around/on me. But I'll try reading out loud next time!

Not for long because they tried too hard to eat the words. I switched to audio books around them.

I have been known to read while sitting with my chickens. I've never considered reading aloud to them. Perhaps, I'll give it a try.

Although I suspect as soon as they realize I haven't brought snacks, their interest will disappear. To them, I'm just a human vending machine they can peck at for treats.

Last year I lost a 14 year old hen to old age. 2 days before she passed I could tell she was pulling away from the outside world and withdrawing, at this time she looked to me for a bit of companionship, more than she normally did. So to while away the handful of hours I knew I had left with her, I sat and read out loud to her. She would stand next to me as I sat on the floor, she would close her eyes, wobble a bit as I droned on. If I stopped reading she would quickly open her eyes! I believe these hours of reading to her gave her the comfort she needed to cross that rainbow bridge.
