I work in a vet hospital so it goes without saying that I and everyone I work with are animal lovers. I got my first chickens about a month and a half ago and love them. I am asked atleast once a day if now that I have chickens will I stop eating it.

We are a big meat eating family and I never thought about the fact that now I have a pet that's the same as a dinner I make twice a week.

Just curious if anyone stopped eating chicken after getting them as pets.

Writing this made me hungry.........

I still eat chicken even though I have a bunch of pet chickens. But the chicken I eat is not MY chickens. As long as it's not my animals I'm fine with eating it.

Yes, still eat it....

Lost a turkey today, it was gotten by a critter,
was able to skin it because i wanted to save the feathers,
but couldnt bring my self to eat what was left of him.

. He was a wild breed,
I gotta get some more - he was sooo cool.

So, I have not been able to kill and eat one of
my own yet..... maybe someday.

We not only still eat chicken but have gone into farming raising chickens and various other animals for meat. I know that it bothers some people but no one in our family minds. I'd rather eat the food I raise than something from a supermarket!

There are times when I just crave KFC - it's the forbidden fried food that calls to me, I think. I don't fry anything; heck, I hardly cook at all!

I grow chickens (incubate and hatch fairly often) so the cockerels don't get named; they eventually go live at a friend's yard in their "Freezer Camp" coop until they're processed. The friends keep half and give half of the number I bring them back to me, all packaged up quite nicely for the fridge or freezer.

Yes, I eat chicken. Especially the mean ones. Those taste the best. The nasty mean silkie cockerel we had made very good soup.

I don't have a lot of birds for eating. Mostly I just have my layers. So we have to buy chicken we want to eat usually.

Your problem is they are "pets" they are not pets. they are farm animals, what do you do with farm animals? they either are working like horses oxen or milked or they are eaten. ask the 4h clubs why they have auctions for 2 reasons money for the kids and they learn these are not "pets". It kind of reminds me of people who say they are afraid of guns because they kill people, no they are tools like a steak knife or a car, those are tools also but they cause deaths to people who misuse them. You work in a vet's office, so you know what happens if fluffy or spot eats chocolate right? yes it can kill them but we humans can eat it without Ill effects. put everything in life into it's rightful context and your roosters and old hens will be dinner and potential roos and hens will become angel food cake and deviled eggs...

I know what you mean I have eaten more chicken since I got them than ever before. Mine do not have names (well apart from some very unforum friendly rude ones when they are refusing to go into their run) they are not pets they are here for a purpose and when that is done they are toast.
