Do you think chickens can tell when it's going to snow?

We've had a couple very warm days and some snow melting to the point we could take them out of the run on a supervised walk yesterday and today - their first outing in a month, and they only had one outing then (which was one month after snows stopped their daily "free-range" foraging).

But today stayed cold and we knew a fair amount of snow was coming. We penned them back in the run and they seemed worked up; more than just excited from spending time outside the run. It seemed like they were actually upset... but at what? Everything was "normal" except the coming snowstorm.

Once the snow started they quietly retreated to their little hangout hut in the run. Now they are just hunkered down, calm as can be, twiddling their thumbs as the snow falls.

If I had to live outside, I'd be cranky at late winter snowstorms, too!

Anyone who lives outdoors most of the time will become very 'weather wise'! Chickens are no exception, and they've already had 'snow time', so they remember what it's all about.

My girls get excited when I come home after work. They flock to the gate begging to be let out, even if it's a light rain or flurries, like yesterday and Friday. I say you girls want out in this rain. And they say yes in chicken speak. So I let them out. If I don't let them out, they will pace back and forth. GC

Too funny! :lau I've often said though they are quite smart they lack common sense. I wonder if what we think of as common sense is a mammalian thing?
