Do You Think Diapering Chickens Is Crazy?

helloo! I have made many threads on silkys and diapers..ect

and I was wondering how many of you think the diapers are unrealistic..and or crazy

I reallyyy want a silky chick to raise...yes I am in the city....and everyone thinks I'm insane.

butt I love chickens and they are the funnest most sweet pets I have ever had...I swear they were as affectionate as my dog...they sat in my lap..came when called, went for walks to the park...I spoiled them rotten!!! they had a lullabuy play for them at nit...they had stockings on christmas, they slept in my room with me 2 or 3 times...LMAO ye I was a wierd kid.


when I was about 8, I fell inlove with chickens...when I was 9 I joined BYC!! (I made my username after my favorite hen , henrietta!..it's still the same today

) hahahahahahahahah and thats how I learned about the chicken diapers. But beforeee I learned about chicken diapers I raised 5 chickens...in my house. My whole family loveeddd them...but their poo was everywhere..and the flies were discusting! sooo after a year my parents made me give them up to a farm..and I visted them every week..but stopped because they started to get untame and unhealthy..it was depressing to see..eventually the only chicken left was henrietta..I had no clue wat happend to the other hens...and the last time I saw henrietta she was in a pen with the rest of RIR's to be eatten

soo ye! this whole time I'v missed having chickens..and I CAN NOT convince my parents to let me get a silky chick to raise!!! they say they poo to much and we live in the city so its crazy. They don't think that diapers accually exist! they think its just some thing ONE person did, and I'm making it sound like its common...but it's possible! they think differently.

ok enough of my blabbering on. do YOU think I'd be crazy to raise one or two chickens in my house...with diapers of course...and I would have an outdoor run for them too.

does anyone here keep chickens in their house as pets..or have??? even ones that came in for an injury...hahahah

I had to bring my chickens in because I had a crowing hen. I sent away for diapers for the both of them. Slifer, a big Brahma was fine with wearing a diaper, but Obelisk the Leghorn acted as if you were Colonel Sanders approaching with an empty bucket...
I had hardwood floors with a couple of area rugs. I work in the mornings so it was a pain in the butt to try and grab a Leghorn, diaper her butt and get to work on time, so I gave up on it. Slifer was soooo much easier...and I'm presuming that a little fluffy thing like a Silkie would be soo darned easy it's not funny. If they did make a mess, I use a pet stain remover to get most of the stain out. The worst thing is the Splort, the liquid nasty stuff that occurs maybe every 5th Ploop.
A silkie, being trained to wearing the diaper would be no trouble at all. Obelisk was also older when we got her and Slifer and wasn't a "pet" chicken either. They were farm chickens. Produce or die...

In all honesty, I don't think you're crazy at all. If you parents agree to it, I see no reason why you couldn't have a pair of Silkie hens in the house. It's not any different than a Parrot or a Conure, or a Canary or a Cockateil. And quieter too!
Chickens are very affectionate, especially the bantams, it seems. Miss MoneyPenny is a Silkie mix and she's very affectionate. And she's my first bantam.
I betcha if your family went to the inner city, they'd find plenty of chickens. There was a guy in the next city over to me that had upwards of 50 chickens. Of course, his were food, but...Also check out your zoning. If they are "pets" like mine are, there may be different rules, than if they were for food or eggs or for show or for sale. I could legally have a rooster if I was going to show or breed...
Silkies do fine in a small dog kennel. Penny has a cat carrier that's her nesting box on my enclosed back porch.

I don't think it's crazy at all. You know the difference between a chicken and a macaw? About $3000.00 dollars! I've had some of my chickens in the house when they were sick and I used diapers on them. It's alot cheaper than a big cage like you would use for a parrot or macaw.

I made the diapers myself and they were really easy to use and keep clean, I just put a paper towel in the little pouch at the back and changed that twice a day. Roosters seem to have less and smaller poo than the hens, but they are noisier.

I think chickens are great pets and can be just as affectionate as a dog or cat, and they are sooo funny too! I hope you do get your silky.

If you have a yard at all, you should also consider how little space a Silkie or two would take. If you have a portable coop(google something like a henhut or an eglu to see what I mean), you wouldn't need much space at all. Chances are you could build something for much less cost than you could buy already out together. You could even convert a doghouse by adding a nest, some perches and so forth.

thanks for the replies, yes I have a backyard, my old chickens used to roam it all day, come in at nit. But I have a shed outside to if I need an outdoor coop. I just prefer indoor pets

I should show this thread to my parents..maybe that will convince them to let met get a silky

I don't see why they don't want me to, they have come home with tranchulas. chamilions, horses, racoons, and just yesterday they were looking for a baby skunk (we found the mother dead) and I saw the baby just hours earlier.

yet they wont agree to a chicken!! lmao

for those of u who use diapers, how does it leak? and does it stay on ok?? or does it like fall off?
