Do you think I need to get rid of all my chickens?

If you have a college near you lots of times they will do it... or maybe the vet?

The vet near me will do fecal tests on my chickens (haven't had one, so I don't know what it costs). You may want to call around the vets and see if one will do it and go from there. You may only need to start with one or two birds and not the entire flock too.

Do you have mice or rats around your coop. They could be giving your chickens salmonella.

Bait and trap.

Are you for real????????? I didn't know that!

Feces, you use gloved hands, pick up samples and give them to your vet and they can test them. Even small animal vet can do the samples because they gotta test salmonella in cats and dogs.

I happened to read the back of the package of chewies one day, and there was a salmonella warning on it. So I did a search, and apparently people have become sick from salmonella from dog chews. Freaky, huh?

I would suggest not sharing the chewies with your dog and of course, washing your hands after handling the chews.

Sorry you have been miserably ill so often lately. Ick, not fun at all! Hope it never happens again.

Was the salmonella actually diagnosed by a medical professional? Were you tested? There are a lot of illnesses, especially viruses, with the same type of symptoms.

Your chickens have not been tested, you can't know it came from them until they are. I highly recommend talking to a vet about testing.

If the source IS your chickens, why would you want to keep any of them?

I went to the docter and they said it was salmonella both times. And about keeping my chickens, I want to keep them because they are my pets. Some people have dogs and cats, I have my chickens.

Okay, that being the case, see about getting the chickens tested. Hopefully they will be clean and you can keep them all. If they are all clean, you will need to start looking into other sources of the salmonella. I don't think keeping just a few versus all of them will make any difference if they're all clear.

With your diabetes, you need to be very careful, as there are many sources of salmonella. Good luck!
