Do you think I should get Rhode Island Whites or Delawares?

Which do you prefer?

Both those breeds will produce Red Sex Links with my Production Red Rooster.

I have decided to just order them from Cackle Hatchery because I haven’t had success finding them locally and I don’t want to travel further than pickup at my post office.

I won’t be ordering them til mid July maybe plus I’ll be adding some guineas to the order which dropped down to $4.70 for hatchery choice compared to $6 to $9 per keet from fb! (Granted once you add in shipping it comes out to about the same 🤣)

So, which would you prefer? They weigh the same, one difference is RIW lay more eggs per year on average. I plan on eating the male offspring and keeping the female offspring for one year and eat them come winter when they stop laying. (I’ll keep the original parents).

ETA: I ended up getting both Delaware & Rhode Island White. So we shall see how each breed does.

Considering you are eating them, I vote Delaware. It is a taste thing, plus you know they have the silver Gene where it may be missing in a white bird (I do not know for sure). I just made a similar choice, but between Delaware and Light Sussex.

Which one did you choose out of those two? The hatchery I’m ordering from doesn’t have Light Sussex so I had to go with RIW vs Delaware.

Ooo you’ve tasted Delawares before? 🤔 I may have to change my mind to Delawares then.

I know the poll has Delawares winning but no one mentioned why.

I went with Delaware. I also ordered Dorking. My plan is to raise and breed both. Taste both and use the Delaware to make sex-link for the market that wants pullets.

Thank you for your input. I have decided on getting Delawares to create sex links and eat them 😊 (I’m glad too because I’m not a fan of plain white chickens, I have white leghorns and I’m thinking of “upgrading” to brown leghorns 😂)
