Do you think she is a "splash?"

I'm curious what constitutes a true "splash". Looking at the yellow chick she has black on her head, wings and tail. Her sister beside her is blue but other yellow chicks did not have white. Father is Lavender Orpington, mother is CA white. CA whites can have spotting too so I'm not sure if it's just that coming through or because of the blue/blue crossing she is a splash.

Thanks! Sorry, I should have explained. We are assuming my boy is carrying blue because the cross is yielding a mix of blue, yellow, and back chicks. It's assumed the CA white has blue as well. Unless it's Lavender/Blue = Blue?

I've never actually seen a splash so wasn't sure. I'm keeping her and a blue sister to see how they grow. It was a surprise to see these colors from that combo.

Your Lavender is not carrying the blue gene as he must have two copies of lavender for it to be showing. So he will breed as black when bred to other colors that are not Lav.

Your white could be carrying a blue gene.. but you cannot get splash from blue cross to black (lav)... only blue and black. You are correct that a splash could come from a blue cross to blue.. but I don't THINK that is the case here. I think that is a white chick... maybe with some leakage.

The yellow chicks are white adults. The blues and blacks will be as they appear. Check out this calculator, the second drop down tab is in English. It doesn't account for leakage..

Your offspring when bred back to your sire will give you a percentage of Lav chicks, maybe 25%...

Thank you! This makes more sense. People had mentioned him carrying blue so I wasn't sure. He has produced a blue chick with my EE as well. (She has blue leakage). I'm very interested to see when bred back what we get!

My blue based EE puts out lots of blue based chicks when she was crossed to my black copper Marans.

Glad I was able to make it somewhat comprehensive.

If this is any help, here are the two extremes in my first 100% splash hatching.
They have the yellow colouring with a slight grey tinge like yours, but the splashes aren't black, but deep blue...
Is your one's spot on the head really black?

Adorable! You know I need to look closer. She's 3 weeks now and I just assumed black. She had 3 "all blue" siblings but they varied in shades. One I swear looked lavender
