Do you think this building would make a good start for a coop?

I think that for $300 you could build a nice shed that would not need insulated out of wood.
I thought that it got real cold in the winter in Ohio and real hot in the summer?
Wood seems like a better, long term building material to me.
Do you have any friends that work in a lumber mill or hardware store that could buy that wood for you at their employee discount?
We just built a 16' x 12' x 10' high out of 2x6s and used 2x6 walls spaced for ventilation for a wood shed for about $150 for all the lumber! Price is cheap right now if you can buy wholesale.
Good luck!

I agree with the other posts. I have two coops. One we built and the second is a metal one we bought from a place that sells metal sheds. There are pictures on my BYC Page. The one at Lowes has sliding doors which to me can be a pain(I had one years ago with the sliding doors very similar to the one you posted), but everyone is different, it may work out for you. You will probably want to put some type of insulation for the heat in the summer and cold in the winter. My nest boxes are on the outside of my coop with access to collect the eggs. Also you will need to put some ventilation in. Does the shed come with a floor? A lot of sheds don’t. Good luck on what ever you do and please post some updates. Some pics would be nice too.

I checked out your BYC Page. That is a nice barn in the background. Is it yours? If it is you could build an attached coop to it and make them a beautiful run.

Thank you for the replies everyone!

cmom---are you talking about the brown barn or the white ones? They are both ours but the brown one is coming down this year... it's an old corncrib that is nearly falling over and probably should have come down a decade ago, lol. It's really not suitable for chickens unless we did a lot of work to it. My husband considered it, but decided it was just too much.

Those white barns are where we have the pony and the pigs and also keep the straw and some of the equipment. We probably could add to it and I did bring it up to my husband, but he said it would be too far from the house and then the chickens would end up his job when they're supposed to be mine

.

You all make a good point about the tin siding. I mentioned it to my husband and he agreed that was something he hadn't thought about. Not to worry, though. He said if we can't find a prefab building that will work he'll just build one like what we want. He's so understanding.

Whatever we end up with, I'll be sure to post pictures!!
