Do your Featherlegs need banding?

Banding requirements are only for some states, not all. Its one of those inconsistencies that exist that causes additional confusion. Most of the states that require banding also have vested interests in commercial poultry houses. Yet, for every outbreak here in the SE in the past five years it has been traced back to a commercial house and not to a private flock.

Here in Maine the State does not Band birds that have been tested, all you need is the paperwork. I was originally asking if for Showing are you reqiured to have bands on Feather legs? And do they need to be ABA bands? I don't normally band my Featherlegs, because it can cause injury to the feathers, and it is so hard to twist those bands with the feather in the way.

Funny, the search function found me just the thread I needed for once...lol

My question was similar about banding feather legged birds. I recently put bands on a couple of my bantam Cochins, but wanted to ask about possible damage resulting from the bands being on long term before I put them on the show birds. I use metal bands...for a couple reasons, one, the birds for our county fair have to be identified with the childs name on the band, so it's just easier to have imprinted metal bands, two, the metal bands come fully adjustable, so I can use them on the LF and Bantams with just one size band.

so, not having experiece with banding the birds with full and heavy leg feathering...what are some things I should look out for while banding them, and for the period thereafter before they show?
