Turns out the Purina Startena gamebird feed was infested with soldier fly eggs and now they've hatched and are swarming my compost. Do your quail eat them? Mine are looking at me like I'm crazy for even trying. Or, maybe they don't like that they're being given back the compost pile they thought I'd cleaned out. Thoughts?

Those are good for your birds. I was raising them when a 'possum came along and ate all of my larvae. They love the dried ones. I didn't get a chance to feed them live ones.

I guess live soldier fly larvae aren't so amazing to quail. Mine will eat the dried ones after they've eaten the live mealworms. They don't seem to like live solider fly larvae though. Bummer. I thought I hit the jackpot of free quail food.

You could freeze them and then feed them to your birds.

What were you raising yours on? Mine wouldn't touch live or dried BSFL that came from the compost bin. They eat other bugs that find a way into the aviary though, including a praying mantis! Maybe it is the compost taste?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Even the geckos are looking at the larvae and asking each other, "Should we chance it?"
