Hi,
I’ve had quite a few soft shell and lash eggs from the latest lot of rescues I got. I recently lost one but thought nothing of it as she was so very poorly when I got her :(
Today, there are a couple of hens who seem lethargic and there was diarrhoea and what looks like some blood in the poo along with another lash egg. See poo pics (sorry!). Any ideas what’s going on? Coccidiosis, salpingitis?
Thanks,
Jules.

The lash egg is from salpingitis (inflammation of the oviduct.) It is common in high production layers and leads to egg yolk peritonitis/coelomitis. The yellow urates is another sign, and is usually from liver involvement and bile. The blood could be from worms or from the oviduct. Coccidiosis is usually more common in young birds, but you can treat for it with Corid. Caged birds could be susceptible if now out on soil. For worming, Valbazen or SafeGuard liquid goat wormer are very good ones. I can give you dosages if needed.

Thank you so much for that. Would you treat the Salpingitis as there are definite symptoms of that, worm them and ignore the diarrhoea ? I usually use Flubenvet for worming, that do? What would I treat the Salpingitis with?

Flubenvet is good in feed for 7 days, and you can add a little oil or water to the daily portion for it to stick on the feed. It is used mostly in the UK and Europe. We use mostly fenbendazole or albendazole here for worms in the US. For salpingitis it may or may not help once you see lash material. Amoxicillin 250 mg orally twice a day for 7-10 days or enrofloxacin. 10 mg per kg(each 2.2 pounds) given orally twice each day for 5 days are antibiotics most used. Jedds online has some antibiotics.
