Does anybody ever leave a low hanging light on just so that they can watch the chickens grab for bugs ?

I have a welsummer hen ( her name is Coco aka mouser) who catches mice. My chickens free range during the day, so from my kitchen window all I see is Coco running around with her prize while ALL the other chickens are chasing her. It is the funniest thing to watch.

I'm tempted to let her in the house and catch mice.

When my first set of chicks, RIR's, were still in the brooder in the out building, we would do exactly that, cut off all the lights except for theirs!

That's what you call good clean entertainment!

That is so funny! I bet they would do a good job, though! Makes me wish my girls were up to catching mice and snakes but nooooo, we like to sit on our fat, spoiled little butts and wait for dog treats.

Similar idea for mid-day with no light...go to the garden section of your favorite store and buy Japanese Beetle attractant. Hang it just out of reach of your hens. On a good day, it will attract every beetle within an acre radius, and your hens will love you forever.
