Does anybody have any suggestions for hawk control?

So I have lost 3 chickens over the last 2 weeks...... I saw on here somewhere about putting a "web" of fishing line over the top of my coop....whoever posted said he had not lost a chicken ,from the air in 17 years with this practic?

I have done this.....time will tell not replacing any until I make sure......I had lost one.....not sure what had happen......bought another to replace her.....and then lost 2 more the next week....saw the hawk flying off in the back pasture!

this makes since.....

Anyone else done this?

My feeling is that DVDs and CDs only work if the hawks are tripping on LSD. A scoped .17 HMRF, a steady hand, a good eye, and a little practice is all that will "deter" a hawk. Don't confuse deterrence with protection. Protection is keeping your chickens out of the hawks world. Deterrence IMHO is more about taking the hawk out of his. There is a subtle difference between the two although both may reach the same goal.

If you try the latter strategy don't forget to look up S.S.S.

The same principle of flashing light to deter predators is used by the popular Nite Guard product. It is effective (minus the hallucinogenics), but nothing works like enough low growing trees in range areas and a covered chicken yard. Many hawks, eagles are protected species, and if you're seen capping them, you'll lose your rifle and pay a high fine. Remember, .17 HMR isn't a round used for bird hunting, and that what goes up, will come down, which could be very unsafe for any neighbors: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...e-Air-Strikes-Chesterfield-Boy-214371901.html

Cover the yard with a hot dipped galvanized 1" chicken wire or something similar instead of fishing line or fabric netting. It is durable and doesn't entrap other wild birds you don't desire to kill.
