Feed is a problem because it is so expensive. The price is stopping me from expanding my flock. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks very much. I'll look up to see is there a mill nearbyThe best way to reduce the cost of feed is to buy it at a better price. Example. A 50lb bag of Layer at a chain feed store is probably around $17-$19. For that same money, I can buy twice as much, 100 pounds of Layer at a local feed mill where they grind their own feed in bulk. A lot of the markup in pre bagged feed is shipping and handling costs. Diesel fuel to run the trucks and paying the driver is expensive.
If all you can do is local, chain feed stores, then at least join the Purina Club and use the coupons they send you. It isn't that much, but every little bit helps.
Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when you price feed. There may be specialty ingredients in some of the branded feeds that are not in the local milled feed. The best way to reduce the cost of feed is to buy it at a better price. Example.
