I have Jumbo Browns (21 hens), and I've been selling eggs for hatching, and hatching what I don't sell. Then at 4-6 weeks old, I take the chicks to the swap meets, and have been selling them. At the last two swaps, I sold over 90 chicks at $2 -$4.00 each, and only brought 12 home. Like was mentioned above, though, it depends on your location. I just put 55 out in my brooder that will be sold in a few weeks, and have another 80 eggs in the bator. So, sure, if you work at it, I think you can make money on Quail. I also just got started in Buttons, as they seem to sell well at the swaps. Your initial setup will cost to build or buy cages etc, but once that's done, you're good to go.

Thanks guys

Judging by what you all are doing it shouldnt be too hard to persuade the mister, it will just take a bit of time.

I dont really know where I end up. Maybe cover the feed cost and to hatch out more. I have a few ideas for ya. Look for free places to advertise them. I had business cards made cheap and made flyers on my computer even cheaper. Feed stores normally let you post them, Craigslist is a good place to post them under the farm and garden section, we have a paper called Iwanna that costs like a buck but advertising is free www.iwanna.com but I dont know if that a nationwide paper our just local to my state. Most states agriculture depts publish some type of paper that has free advertising, you can sell eggs on Ebay, we have a lot of organic gardners around here that want the manure from the quail (and rabbits), the eggs are better to me than chicken eggs to eat, sushi resturants sell them or put them in there foods, quail itself is white meat I think so thats another option. I didnt know this and felt bad but hey its paid for all my feed for the year but a local horse club bought 2000 grown quail to relaease in order to feed the foxes they were hunting. well, thats my idease for ya..

I just wanted to give the topic a friendly bump, because I'm wondering as well.

We have an uncertified farmers' market in this very remote rural town and I don't even know where to check to find out if I can sell the meat or eggs I raise. I think it would have to be on the low-down. (Maybe I can barter it for some illegal goat cheese or unpasteurized milk?)

I'd love to hatch and raise them and sell them on craigslist for feed money, but I'm unsure if in CA I'm required to get a permit. I swear I've read both 'no' and 'yes' here! ??

Scrambled, no on the permit if it's courtnix quail, yes on some other species.

Pat to be legal: you have to sell LIVE birds but.... you can offer to process them FREE to clients. I doubt too many would want them live, but that way you aren't running afoul of state sanitation laws (check with your county laws too, google is your friend).

So Betty wants 6 quail for a dinner party, you have her fill out a form for 6 live quail and then you can process them as a favor to your "friend" Betty and be legal. They just have to be alive when you take the order.

It's not as bad as it sounds, he can take his eggs and take ORDERS for quail for DELIVERY the next week, he just has to sell them live. The way around this is to have a box where people can check off if they would like them processed as a favor, but by law you can't charge for processing unless you're a USDA oked facility, but you can process free for friends....

So, by ordering they are now his friends, and he can process them as a free favor, and not run afoul of the laws. They birds just need to be alive when the order is taken, they can be cleaned when delivered.

to legally sell here in texas you have to get npip certification. but the law isd lax in that u can sell birds from your backyard without real worry . im getting mine though just so i can reassure folks of my birds health
