Does anyone else cry when they lose a chick?

what are signs of this disease? Cocci. What will tip me off that they may have it?

A sign of Cocci is blood in the stool.

kakayona-from what I understand and from my experience, blood in stool is one sign but all may not get it, especially chicks under 3 weeks may not. Mine were very lethargic, not eating/drinking much. Some would stand by themselves and sorta sway and sleep on and off. Their feathers look unkempt, but mostly just the being super sleepy. One day old chicks will be sleepy, but mine are 1-3 weeks and were doing great, annoyingly loud and happy chirping eating and drinking sleeping then scratching around-and all of sudden all the activity just stopped. BUT-coccidosis comes from the soil so in very young chicks it might not be if they have had no contact with soil, but you have to remember soil from your shoes, hands, the kids hands or that cute free range they went on for only 10 minutes!

I'm new at raising chickens and lost 3. "Libby" was DOA and I was so upset seeing her little crumpled body. "Lucille" died 2 hrs after arrival. She was so weak and didn't open her eyes until right before she died. My daughter made a bed separate from the others and just befoe she passed "Lucille"opened her eyes really big and wide and looked at both of us. My daughter said it was because she wanted to know who had been taking such good care of her before she went to heaven. (<-----crying right now as i type this!) I BAWLED for hours that day....and cried even harder when I had to bury "Rexy" the chick my son named/bonded with 3 days later. Don't feel bad at all...after all we are their Mom and they are our little chickies. It's painful seeing them sick in pain or dying. *big hugs to you* I'm so sorry for your losses.


(my kids wanted to name the chicks who died the 1st day so that we could remember them properly.)

Yes, I cry when I lose one. They bring so much joy to our lives, but it's the pits when they don't make it. I hope you never lose your sensitivity and compassion; those are admirable qualities.

No never ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!, we raise many hundreds of chicks a yr and have well over 100 or so adults in breeder pen's and coop's. It is just natural sometime to have losses and it is what it is so I never lose any sleep over losing birds.
